TAINISTE Joan Burton shocked onlookers earlier today during a bizarre altercation with a heckler in which the Labour party leader declared herself to be “the Mother of Dragons”.

Burton had been campaigning for the yes side in the upcoming marriage equality referendum in west Dublin in the early morning, when the incident occurred.

Eyewitnesses claim that a passer-by, who had been offered a flier by one of Burton’s campaigners, began to react loudly to the presence of the Tanaiste, and started to hurl abuse at her.

Burton remained stoic throughout the outburst, and tried to assure the man that her priority this morning was the passing of the Marriage Equality bill, and any other grievances he had should be taken up through the proper channels.

When the man in his twenties, described by witnesses as being a man in his twenties, continued his tirade, Burton exploded into a chilling rage which silenced all around her.

“I remember her saying, ‘Do you know who you’re talking to right now?’ to the guy,” said Frank Thomlin, who had been heading for the bus at the time. “Then she screamed at him that she was ‘the mother of dragons’, while throwing her fliers up into the air. She then followed it up with a rant in some language that I didn’t understand. The guy wasn’t long going on about his business”.

The incident brings the number of times a TD has used Game of Thrones quotes under duress to 12, and follows an instance in March where Michael Noonan assured the ECB that “a Lannister always pays his debts”.
