“When We Said Visit Tipperary, We Didn’t Mean Clonmel, Carrick or Tipp Town,” Lonely Planet Clarifies

CLARIFYING Tipperary as one of its top choices for best places to visit in 2026, travel publication Lonely Planet has updated its original statement to specify that visitors should probably avoid Clonmel, Carrick-on-Suir, and Tipperary town.

“We meant Tipperary in general – just the nice, touristy bits like the Rock of Cashel and Cahir Castle,” the update read. “Not, you know, the run-down, forgotten towns. Please drive through them as fast as possible. Especially Tipp town… yikes.”

Recommending the Glen of Aherlow for its “ridiculously scenic valley flanked by the Galtee Mountains and Slievenamuck,” the Lonely Planet writers praised the county’s “outdoorsy charm” – ideally far away from its urban eyesores.

“Seriously, avoid those God-forsaken towns and villages. Basically any built-up area that’s been left to rot over the past two decades – vacant buildings, chronic social problems, addiction issues – steer clear. The rest is lovely, though. Especially the parts without, you know, Tipperary people in them,” the publication clarified.

Meanwhile, the rest of the counties have begun wondering when it’ll be their turn to get mentioned in Lonely Planet so they too can completely lose their shit over it, while briefly forgetting about their own run-down towns.
