Government Commit To Voting Against Mercosur Deal Now They’re Certain It Will Pass With No Problems
BRAVELY BREAKING ranks with other governments across the EU, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael is to proudly beat its chest, roar and say ‘not on our watch’ to the EU-South America trade deal known as Mercosur before it is immediately passed, WWN can reveal.
“Now that we can be sure beyond any reasonable doubt that this trade deal will 100% pass and has all the votes it needs, we can now vote against it safe in the knowledge such a vote means nothing but makes it look like we were fighting for our agriculture industry and farmers,” explained a government spokesperson, of a trade deal that would see Irish farmers compete against lower-cost South American beef.
Significant concerns were raised about the EU–South America trade deal by FF and FG backbenchers, chief among them was ‘I can’t get reelected unless we pretend we’re doing something about this’.
“We would greatly appreciate if the dull-minded farmer portion of the population is hoodwinked by this and continues to vote for our parties and independent TDs that prop us up. Good lads,” added the government, hoping this transparent stunt is reported as a noble stand by the media.
Under the Mercosur deal, the Irish consumer faces having the option to buy lower standard meat from the poorly regulated South American countries Irish farmers buy their cattle feed from to the tune of 740,000 tonnes a year.
Those left distraught by the trade deal which could serve as a further blow to farmers have been told that at least Ireland’s waterways can continue to be poisoned thanks to the government securing an extra four years of allowing farmers to exceed the acceptable EU levels of nitrates.
