Dublin Councils Considering Property Tax Charge For Stationary M50 Motorists
MOTORISTS stuck on the M50 could soon be charged property tax under a new proposal put forward by the four councils in Dublin.
Up until now, stationary vehicles clogging the motorway for hours at a time have avoided such levies, but under the new scheme drivers could end up paying thousands annually.
“These people are taking up space and space in Dublin costs money,” one council official explained.
With some delays lasting several hours, DCC estimates certain drivers may spend one to two months per year on the motorway, with tax bills ranging from €3,000 to €5,000.
“It is not fair that people have been hanging around tax free on the property,” a source within one council confirmed. “We will probably backdate the charges too once implemented.”
It is understood larger vehicles will fall into higher tax brackets, which has sparked outrage among hauliers and public transport operators.
“This is just another tax on the working man,” said one working man, who was not in work yet due to the fact he was stuck on the M50.
