“They Keep To Themselves & Don’t Embrace Our Culture”: Calls For Loyalist Immigrants To Be Deported Back To Scotland & England
“MY ANCESTORS said ‘stop the boats’ when the Scots first stepped off those boats in the 1600s, and here we are how many years later and these Loyalist immigrants still haven’t assimilated?” shared one objector to the presence of Scottish and English immigrants in Northern Ireland.
The controversial setting alight of a bonfire in Tyrone which had effigies of refugees in a boat on the top of it has led to fresh discussions on the inability of Loyalists to embrace traditional Irish culture and rituals, sparking suggestions Loyalist immigrants may feel more comfortable and at home in their native Scotland and England.
“I’m all for immigrants, but only if they embrace the culture and aren’t a drain of our resources, these fellas have no jobs, spend their days building big fires when they’re not pushing drugs or carrying out extortion and then it costs us taxpayers to clean up the bonfires. It’s a disgrace,” added another local.
“They don’t encourage integrating with the native people who were here long before them. In some circles they even prevent their own women from marrying someone from a different religion and culture. If they were anymore backward they’d think electricity was witchcraft. I’ve never seen one so much as attempt Irish dancing,” shared one member of the local community.
Elsewhere, the PSNI has confirmed they will not enforce a Belfast council’s order to remove pallets from a south Belfast site which is next to asbestos and a substation providing power to two hospitals because many of their officers were looking forward to attending the bonfire with friends and family.
