Is News That Racists From Both Sides Of The Border Are Uniting The Inspiring Anti-Sectarian Message We Need?
THE RUN-UP to the 12th of July can be rife with sectarian tensions but a disparate group of virulently racist anti-immigration agitators are inspiring the entire island as they cross the divide and embrace leading racist Loyalists in the north.
The counter-extremism organisation Institute for Strategic Dialogue has identified consistent collaboration between anti-migrant organisers in the south and Loyalist criminals in the north, who despite their religious backgrounds have united to better plan and organise how they intimidate and target foreigners.
“Sometimes we get caught up in the ‘conventional’ ways of building bridges and cross-community consensus that we lose sight of the most obvious ways to tear down sectarian barriers,” explained Dr Nora Lyons, an expert in post-conflict community building.
“That these racists, in search of the common goal of being better, bigger and more organised racists, chose to put aside their religious differences that have scarred this nation for generations and unite in their common hatred is a beautiful lesson to us all,” added Dr Lyons.
Many people have noted that with the world ‘gone to pot’ it takes something extraordinary like bigots from either side of the border becoming friends to remind you of humanity’s possibilities and not just its limitations.
“Fuck it, I can’t believe this is what it took for me to see the error of my ways but I’m going to ring my cousin Ciara and patch things up,” said one woman who, inspired by the anti-sectarian message, was going call her cousin she shunned 27 years ago for marrying a Protestant.
