Could Strapping An iPad To Your Child’s Face & Leaving Them In A Field For The Day Be The Solution To Soaring Summer Camp Costs?
EYE-WATERING prices for only handful of hours each day, one enterprising Irish parent may have found the cost-conscious alternative to expensive summer camps and childcare.
“He’s happy out, look at him sure,” said local mother Teresa Kearney, as she dropped her 8-year-old Adam off to a nearby empty field.
“Don’t just write ’empty field’ when you write this up okay, it’s secure with four stone walls and a gate I can lock. But sure he doesn’t know that, with that iPad strapped to his face he doesn’t notice a thing,” confirmed Kearney who couldn’t afford the €750 per week fees at a nearby sports camp, which only ran until 2pm.
“Myself and my husband work 9 to 5 so what are we meant to do from 2pm til 5pm? Spend more money we don’t have on a childminder?” offered Kearney as she placed her 6-year-old Maeve in the same field.
While Kearney admitted her solution might not be to everyone’s liking, she has said it is possibly the only viable option they have as a working couple.
She also urged people calling on her and her husband to avail of flexible working arrangements to live in reality.
“Yeah, ask for the time off through a dedicated scheme my job has, just for show mind, and then that marks you as an enemy if you ever actually try to avail of it, nice one! How about a country where two working parents can afford these things. Ever thought about that?” countered Kearney.
“Instead of criticising me why don’t you do the smart thing and drop your kids off here too. They love it, not a peep out of them. Delighted to see me when I collect them. It’s only lashed rain four days in a row so far but it’s character building”.
Asked what she thought of the possibility of passing strangers seeing the children left by themselves, Kearney said she’d be thankful someone was keeping an eye on them.
