Man Working From Malta Brands Working From Home ‘A Load Of Nonsense’
A MAN who once listed his official tax residence in Malta to lessen his tax burden has labeled the indulgence of the culture of working from home part of a ‘pervasive entitlement culture’.
“I agree wholeheartedly with him, even if one could argue he felt so entitled to enriching himself through gaining the State’s mobile phone licence he, according to the Moriarty Tribunal findings, made two payments to Michael Lowry in 1996 and 1999 totalling IR£500,000 (£147,000 and £300,000) and supported a loan of £420,000 given to Lowry in 1999, a benefit equivalent to a payment,” said one attendee as he proudly cheered Denis O’Brien’s remarks at a business function in Dublin.
Receiving a lifetime achievement award at the Irish Investors Awards, Denis O’Brien bemoaned the state of working culture today, and contradicting the vast majority of academic studies which have highlighted working from brings increase productivity.
“This lark of people saying, ‘I’ll come into the office on Tuesday and Wednesday; otherwise I’m going to be working at home’, is a load of nonsense. I don’t employ those kinds of people, and to be honest with you, I never will,” O’Brien said, who could be more flexible with employees if they made payments to politicians.
Treated to a rousing reception, O’Brien’s remarks spoke to a growing fear that offering working from home arrangements could bring employees flexibility and closer to not feeling like a meaningless cog put to work in a machine built to produce profits for a small cabal of ultra-rich.
“Can you even call it a job if you end up with the sort of work life balance that sees you productive in work AND able to enjoy life, thank God the current economic climate is pointing towards mass layoffs, that’ll teach these entitled workshy bastards on entry level salaries to think we have to give a shit about them,” confirmed another attendee, who is in line to win the Soulless Bastard award at next year’s gathering.
