Maybe Negative Inner Voice Has A Point, Concedes Man’s Therapist

HAVING SPENT several months helping guide 32-year-old Martin Doherty away from negative self-defeating thoughts to building a stronger mental response to any stresses in his life, therapist Noel Keegan has to admit maybe the negative thoughts in Doherty’s head have a point on this occasion.

“Ah now in fairness, your critical inner voice has a point,” Keegan said before he could scoop the words back up and return them to his mouth.

“No, I just mean, you’re an awful man for saying you’ll do something and then not doing it and blaming someone else is all, aren’t you Martin? No judgement here, but let’s call a spade a spade and admit that nagging voice has a point,” added Keegan.

Normally careful to offer his clients a welcoming and non-confrontational environment when they are in an emotionally vulnerable state of processing their actions and the actions of those closest to them, Keegan disregarded best practice in delivering therapy to say ‘fair point’.

“I’m not saying you have to listen to everything your C.I.V says, like, it’s wrong about you being zero craic, you’re a lovely fella, but if you promised your wife you’d pack in the five-a-side for a few months to help out more with the kids in the evenings, you can’t be going back on that, can you?” Keegan said, taking the C.I.V’s side for once.

“And while we’re at it, you were wrong about that lady in the car park in Tescos, you shouldn’t be parking in the disabled spaces even for two minutes and she was right to call you out,” concluded Keegan, before reminding his client he owes him for last week’s session as well as for today.
