IT’S the controversial and unconventional message that seems to be resonating with voters against all the odds, and local independent Paudie Cahill could be on course to cause an upset in his constituency.

“If ye vote for me, I’ll be looking after our area and that. I’ll be your voice in the Dáil”. It’s a refrain Cahill has often repeated as he meets locals on the doorsteps. The sentiment, bland and light on detail, seems the complete antithesis of what voters are interested in hearing and yet one by one voters become transfixed with cast iron pledges to vote for Cahill falling from their mouths in a matter of minutes.

“A sophisticated electorate needs dense policy discussion, they want to pour over white papers, they want to hear about long term plans. I said he was a fool to just bellow ‘I’ll fight for the area’ every chance he got,” said veteran campaigner Willie ‘Smile’ O’Neill.

The vague, low-on-the-detail, ideology free message initial rubbished by the likes of O’Neill is now being adopted by other candidates in rural constituencies who somewhat foolishly wasted thousands on leaflets heavy on detail across a wide range of issues.

“It’s about time someone was willing to say that, my heart soars when I hear you speak. Your message of ‘I’ll look out for us’ is inspiring. I’ll be telling the family and the girls down in work to vote for ye,” said one local resident, waving off Cahill, tears in her eyes brought forth by finally having a politician knock on her and promise something with very little evidence they can or will deliver on it.
