Remember It’s RNLI Casual Friday Today
THE RNLI has reminded beach goers that today is casual Friday and expect to see its volunteers not wearing stuffy life vests or any safety gear as they carry out duties, WWN reports.
“We just wanted to give our rescuers a little breather from those awful clunky outfits for one day out of the year,” a spokesperson for the RNLI stated. “If you had any idea of the weight of those life vests and helmets in this weather when your trying to save someone you’d wonder why we bother wearing them at all”.
Donning t-shirts, shorts, sunglasses and baseball hats, the local team of RNLI rescue members were also joined in casual Friday by the Coastguard who welcomed the rare day off from protocol.
“Probably a bit dangerous now we think about it, but sure look, it’s only a bit of craic at the end of the week,” said winchman David Brooks as he lowered a scantily clad team member from a recuse helicopter onto a fishing vessel to retrieve an injured fisherman.
“Hopefully our pilot can find his way to the hospital without his radio headpiece, although that Yankees baseball cap suits him in fairness”.
Casual Friday comes as a nice distraction today for helicopter crews at the Irish Coast Guard who fear for their jobs now the State has entered into a new contract for the rescue service, while their seafaring RNLI counterparts celebrate 200 years of service this week saving lives with very little or no money.
