Would Be Rude To Make Big Deal Of Fine Gael Politician Being Convicted Of Fraud, Concludes Irish Media
INFERRING that a Fine Gael politician being found guilty of money laundering somehow cast aspersions on the entire party, its selection process, the company it keeps and its ability to govern would be wrong, confirmed the Irish media today.
“Actually, it’s ‘former FG member’, that’s a real guttersnipe move to omit that detail. Nakedly political in nature. Has all decency and integrity left your publication?” explained an irate editor of an Irish daily newspaper.
Sections of the Irish media have concluded in the wake of Frank Kilbride’s three year prison sentence for money laundering, it is right and just to resist the urge to make such a thing a national talking point and the subject of endless Liveline episodes.
Civility, politeness and an aversion to crude unbecoming reportage common in gauche media outlets in the UK, has meant Irish publications have chosen not to berate Fine Gael PR personnel for weeks on end with indignant proclamations of how the fate of Irish democracy is at stake.
“To make a political point out of the acts of an individual person is wrong, that’d be like making out Sinn Féin was guilty of the crimes of Jonathan Dowdall for his part in the Regency Hotel shooting but no respectful media outlet would do that, and so it stands with this money laundering man, and the party, who it would be wrong to directly name here, should be afforded fair and levelheaded coverage,” confirmed one broadsheet.
Some media commentators have expressed their relief and a touch of pride that the puerile feeding frenzies which infect media abroad has not taken root here.
“It’d be like bringing up the pedo and drug dealing business when covering that Isaac Allen bankruptcy business. We’d be well within our rights to do so, but as with Fine Gael these are good honest middle to upper middle class types we’re talking about. That sort of coverage is only for those who deserve it,” concluded the media.
