Horrifying Moment Olympic Diver Became Stuck In Mid-Air
ORGANISERS at the Paris Olympics called on emergency service personal earlier this morning at the Olympics Aquatics Centre in Saint Denis after a competitor in the diving competition became stuck in mid-air.
German diver Lina Wagner, participating in the Women’s Synchro 3m Springboard Final, had carried out her routine as expected and achieved liftoff from the board, only to become stuck in mid-air.
Her synchro partner, Angelique Weber, completed the dive safely.
“Right now we are trying our best to help Lina, we ask anyone with rescue expertise to make themselves available to us,” Noelle Garnier, manager of the Aquatics centre being used for the games pleaded over a tannoy as the once buoyant crowds at the event turned fearful and panic-ridden.
Efforts to get Wagner down were hampered by the diver’s position high above the deep swimming pool, hindering attempts to operate a safety ladder. A nationwide strike in France by cherry picker operators means that the earliest one would be available is Monday morning.
‘Aqua Rigor Mortis’ the condition which renders a diver frozen in mid-air is an extremely rare phenomenon and has only occurred once before at the Olympics in 1952 in Helsinki. Similar problems in rescuing the athlete, a Spaniard by the name of Alfonso Morales, occurred and sadly Morales died of starvation weeks later despite organisers trying for days on end to throw fruit and bread into Morales’ mouth from their position several metres below the stuck diver.
