A CONUNDRUM faced by HR managers in many medium to large companies with a workforce which ranges in age, should more be done to protect millennials aged managers from elder abuse meted out by younger staff?

“You’d think the power dynamic of manager/underling always favours the person with the senior position but often when deriding someone on account of their elderly age, it can upend that dynamic and cause huge hurt and trauma,” explained an expert in office psychology, Barry Evers.

“When 23-year-old Morgan said she loves retro classic pop like Rihanna and Shakira, I felt light headed, my lunch was threatening to come up. You can’t just say things like that in full hearing distance of the whole office, it’s hurtful” elaborated senior account manager at Henley Consumer Solutions, Shona Dunne.

“And then, when she noticed me dropping to my knees and screaming ‘nooooo’ she had the temerity to say ‘I didn’t mean anything by it, I think noughties music is better than properly old nineties stuff’,” added Dunne, who is on stress leave for the next 4 months in a bid to recover for the ordeal.

Internally, the HR team at HCS have implemented sensitivity training for their under-25s staff in a bid to avoid future incidents. However, other companies are reporting similar happenings of company-based elder abuse.

“They claim they don’t mean anything by it, the Gen Z crowd, but they know what they’re doing. Asking ‘mad you were around when flip phones were a thing?’ is vindictive, and more importantly can halt office wide productivity in an instant. Company profits are at risk,” explained one HR manager at a multi-national.
