Calls For Taoiseach To Reject Qatar Gift Of €10 Leap Card Top Up
THE CONTROVERSY over Qatar’s attempts to gift US president Donald Trump a $400mn plane has escalated further after the gulf state has made transparently corrupt overtures to our very own leader, Taoiseach Micheál Martin, offering him a €10 Leap card top up.
“It would be unconscionable, immoral, the Taoiseach must immediately reject such a bountiful bonanza or face accusations of being in the Gulf state’s pocket,” Sinn Féin said when speaking to the media.
Were the Taoiseach to accept such a generously lavish gift, which would allow the Fianna Fáil to dine out on at least five individual unlimited 90-minute fare transfers between Luas, bus and Dart it could signal Ireland is adopting the sordid quid-pro-quo politics of Trump that many will say has echoes of Celtic Tiger Ireland.
“If Qatar want to give the Taoiseach such a substantial top up that he can live like a king, it shows they’re desperate. We should use this as a way to foster business relations and trade deals,” remarked one Fianna Fáil back bencher.
While the opposition has been critical of the offer, others see this blatant attempt to enrich the Taoiseach as an opportunity.
“Get me in the room with them, five minutes is all I ask, I’ll have them paying for a Tipperary Metro, just don’t ask me how I get results,” added Michael Lowry.
