DPP File On Moriarty Tribunal Sends Chilling Message To Criminals That They Can Only Get Away With Things For 30 Years Or So
THE EARTH SHATTERING revelation that gardaí have sent a file to the DPP relating to the findings of the Moriarty Tribunal 14 years after its conclusion has gone off like a bomb in the criminal world, WWN can report.
“Jesus, that would put the frighteners up anyone. If they can come after someone 30 years after they are first party to an alleged crime and send a file to the DPP that the DPP might not pursue, they could come for any of us,” offered one criminal not yet famous enough to be given a nickname by the Sunday World.
The tribunal, relating to payments to politicians, concluded that businessman Denis O’Brien made IR£500,000 in secret payments to then Fine Gael minister Michael Lowry and that Lowry ‘secured the winning’ of the 1995 mobile phone network licence for O’Brien.
“The phone has been hopping, clients asking is it true? Can the guards do that, can they really act so swiftly, there’s lads quitting on the spot out of fear they only have a 14 year head start on the guards,” said one solicitor WWN spoke with.
“As a criminal, I can’t help but put myself in the shoes of someone like that. Imagine, how can anyone sleep at night knowing there might be a knock at the door 10,950 days after I first benefited from my alleged crime. That’s only 360 months of enjoying the illegal fruits of my crimes,” ventured another criminal.
“Why would you get into the crime game at all if in the end all you have to show for it is a key part in government formation talks? And people say crime pays, that’s bollocks,” concluded the criminal.
