EXCITED FAI staff are happy to reveal to the Irish sporting public that they discovered something called ‘the League of Ireland’ after doing a routine clear out of their attic.

Explaining that this discovery had nothing to do with the international coverage and football forum interest Shelbourne’s league win under the guidance of manager Damien Duff had received.

“Who knew it was up there the whole time, tucked in behind a match programme from that time Brazil played in Dalymount,” said the FAI, suppressing coughs as the dust on top of the long forgotten contents of the national league filled their lungs.

“We’re actually a bit annoyed at whoever put it up there, because obviously had we known, it’s definitely the sort of thing we’d keep pride of place on the mantelpiece,” said the FAI, of the league’s title race which saw somewhere in the region of 49 teams still in with a chance of becoming champions right up until the penultimate week of the season.

With the influx of interest at the end of the season the FAI has made the sensible decision to talk about how much attention they will give towards promoting the league next season before putting it in the shed next to a 10-year-old tin of Ronseal.
