LANDMARK commemorative stamps often go unnoticed and greeted with little fanfare but this wasn’t the case today as an Irish sporting great got their due after being immortalised on a stamp for what is undoubtedly their finest achievement representing Ireland.

The 5th anniversary of Shane Ross becoming the undisputed Lightweight champion of the world came around in June, prompting many sport and stamp enthusiasts demanding the appropriate honouring of the former Minister for Sport to take place.

“It was between a stamp commemorating this or the time Paul McGrath bossed Baggio in Giants stadium, the chance was an obvious one,” said head of An Post’s commemorative stamps division.

“I think we can all remember those iconic scenes when Shane brought home the belt alongside whoever that young one was, wonder what happened to her,” offered one man in the queue to pick up his stamp which has been restricted to a measly run of just 40,000 stamps.

“It’s not a gold statue but I suppose it’ll do,” said one slightly disappointed Irish boxing fan.

Shane Ross’s offer to pose for a photo with people who purchase the stamps has been politely declined.
