Government Aim To Win Back Public Approval By Fighting Court Decision To Include 19,000 Mother & Baby Home Survivors In Redress Scheme
HAVING TAKEN a lot of heat recently many government TDs, in search of positive headlines, have welcomed the news it will fight tooth and nail against Mother and Baby Home survivors who went to court to be included in a redress scheme.
“We’re struggling for easy wins to get the public back on side so thank God we’ve this golden opportunity to fight a court ruling saying we may have to include 19,000 survivors of Mother & Baby Homes in a redress scheme,” shared one backbench TD, who only speaks out on matters when he thinks he is at risk of not being reelected.
“I think when the public sees how hard we fight against victims like this, they’ll really respond positively to what we represent, not only did we initially exclude them but we’re going to disagree with a court when it says we’ve gotten that decision wrong,” added another TD.
Relief among the TDs is widespread as in addition to this news yet another easy PR win has come along.
“These easy wins are like buses, well buses in other countries that turn up on time and don’t disappear off the display,” confirmed one TD, celebrating the news the government is trying to push through the Arbitration Bill 2026 which would fully ratify CETA, allowing corporations to sue the Irish state in secretive court proceedings if it introduces laws which could ‘harm their profits or investments’.
“Phew! And here was me worried we’d be coming across as completely detached from the concerns of the Irish public”.
Elsewhere, Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan said the army could be deployed to combat 91-year-old activist Lelia Doolan, who has walked from Shannon to the Dáil as part of a protest opposing the US army’s use of Shannon Airport.
