Unclear If Leading Experts In Genocide Would Know Enough About Genocide To Back Up Their Claim Israel Is Committing Genocide
THE COMPLEX WORLD of believing your eyes and ears just got a little more difficult after a resolution passed by the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) stated Israel’s conduct meets the legal definition of genocide as laid out in the UN convention on genocide.
“I think I’ll wait until a real expert weighs in, like the biggest arms dealer to Israel, thank you very much,” shared one person desperately seeking an actual expert voice to lean on in times of wild accusations and baseless hyperbole.
The IAGS presented a number of actions undertaken by Netanyahu’s government throughout the 22-month-long war that it recognises as meeting the threshold for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
“I think perhaps such irresponsible statements should be discounted, I’ll wait to hear what Benjamin Netanyahu has to say about this before making my judgement. If some amateur outfit like the International Association of Genocide Scholars can make such claims, then anyone can,” confirmed another person trying to ascertain the truth of Israel’s actions in Gaza.
The IAGS justified its statement by sighting the widespread attacks on both the personnel and facilities needed for survival, among them healthcare, aid, and educational sectors, while also mentioning the 50,000 children killed or injured by Israel, as highlighted by UN aid organisation Unicef, which impacts the ability of Palestinians in Gaza to survive as a group and regenerate.
“But on what authority are the foremost experts in genocides making such bombastic claims? Who made them the experts in genocide studies all of a sudden? Surely we must hold the opinion of shit posting Twitter trolls in equal esteem?” queried one person who will need a little more than all this to go on before condemning the Israeli government.
