THE NEWS that Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has signed an extradition treaty with UAE was broadly welcomed by the Irish public as it brings the arrest of the Kinahans one step closer to becoming a reality.

However, the signing of two bilateral treaties relating to cooperation on matters of extradition and mutual legal assistance has had unforeseen consequences due largely to the conservative nation’s record when it comes to forced disappearance, arbitrary arrests, human rights abuses and the death penalty.

“It is an honour to sign this treaty now please handover Fiona O’Brien, she left Dubai five years but we never forget, she lived with her boyfriend which is the height of indecency, she must stand trial,” an representative for the UAE crown told Helen McEntee through a male intermediary despite being in the same room as one another.

“And don’t worry, it’ll probably just be a prison sentence but if it’s the death penalty it’ll be by firing squad, we stopped stonings in 2020, we’re not monsters,” confirmed the representative, eagerly awaiting the fruits of this newfound cooperation.

Department of Justice officials have sought to calm Irish people’s fears over signing extradition treaties with oppressive regimes and were quick to remind Irish people that 99% of the time the only people punished with a jail sentence under decency laws are migrant workers from developing nations and the local servant class.

Meanwhile, a legal representative for the Kinahans has criticised the government, saying ‘how are my client’s supposed to secure a way out of the UAE when you only gave a year’s notice that the signing of a treaty was being planned?’
