A COUNTY Waterford man has set himself on fire in the city centre, this morning in an apparent protest over the ongoing furore with the Garth Brooks concerts. Fire-fighter’s rushed to the scene and hosed the man down before rushing him to Ardkeen hospital.

The man, appearing to be in his 30s or 40s is reportedly still alive at the time of writing and has since been airlifted to a special burns unit in Cork University Hospital this afternoon. Firefighters doused the man in white foam and he was then immediately covered by a fire -blanket. Due to the extent of his injuries, he is not expected to survive, doctors have reported.

“He just walked into the main square and started shouting at the top of his voice ‘NO MORE. I CAN’T F**KING TAKE THIS SHIT ANY MORE’.” recalled one eyewitness, who was working in a local shop at the time.

In a dramatic act of protest to the ongoing concert problems, the protester is believed to have doused himself in a flammable liquid before setting himself alight outside a local shopping centre. He then proceeded to run around John Roberts square shouting the lyrics to ‘Standing outside the fire’, before being knocked to the ground by passerby, John Mackey.

“He was running around like a flaming eejit. I had no choice but to deck him. He could have injured someone else, ” said Mr. Mackey, who was on his way to work at the time. “I fucking hate that song too, so I hit him pretty hard in fairness. I hope he’s alright.”

Mobile phone pictures of the incident shows the Garth Brooks fan drenching himself in what appears to be petrol from a red can, before igniting himself and running past the photographer.

“I’m quite happy with the shots,” said Dermot Casey, who took the series of pictures. “I have an old enough phone so the quality isn’t the best, but I’m delighted now with the results……and the money I got off the papers for them of course.”

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has since called on Dublin county council and Croke Park residents to put aside their differences with the 5 night concert, before anyone else gets hurt.
